3 Steps for staying strong when things go wrong: this special for form four student
Happiness is not a goal; it’s the by-product of a life well lived. Deep down, you know this is true. And you also know it isn't always easy.
Life is hard sometimes. It’s impossible to live well without encountering struggle, and there are some seasons in our lives that are especially hard.
For Marc and me, one such season occurred in the fifteen months between September 2008 and December 2009. It was a period of profound loss, beginning when I lost my breadwinning job during the downturn in the economy. It was a scary and financially uncertain time for our family. Worry seeped into everyday life.
As we were learning to navigate our new reality, we were hit with a devastating loss: the death of a
close mutual friend from sudden cardiac arrest. The loss of such a great friend was intense—and just as we were beginning to get back on our feet, my dear brother passed away unexpectedly as well.
With so much loss in quick succession, there were days when getting out of bed was my major accomplishment. This is the nature of struggle, but as the days turn into weeks, months, and then years, we learn to press forward. We learn that we are resilient. We hold a greater appreciation for the people who are dear to us.
Sitting here now, years later, I can honestly say that Marc and I have learned great lessons from that period in our lives. We’ve learned how to cope with the hard times, the pain and disappointment, and we’ve learned that we must fully embrace every bit of joy as we receive it.
We have our daily struggles, as I know you do as well: We struggle to grow our business, we struggle to be the best parents we can be, we struggle to find the balance between work and play, we struggle to embrace healthy relationships and leave the negative ones behind. Through this process, we’ve learned an important lesson:
Our periods of struggle are the avenue to realizing our full potential and happiness.
In learning to overcome the sadness and hardship, we’ve learned to take joy in our accomplishments. We’ve learned to embrace our role as parents, to find the thrill in connecting with you, our readers. We consider you part of our family—and we want to help you find your full potential and happiness.
I know it can be painful, but I want you to reflect on the struggles you are facing right now. And follow these three steps:
1. Ask yourself: What is standing in your way?
List three obstacles keeping you from achieving an important life goal. Write them down on a piece of paper.
2. Next to each obstacle, write down the first action you can take on the road to overcoming it.
For example, lets say you’ve written down “I haven't finished my degree,” because not having a degree is keeping you from getting the job you want. That’s a huge obstacle. Don’t overwhelm yourself by thinking you need to overcome it in one gigantic leap. Instead, know that you can take a tiny step forward in the process of overcoming it. Figure out what this tiny step is. Can you spend ten minutes online looking up admission requirements for a local university? Can you call your school to get a copy of your completed transcript? The goal isn’t to solve the entire problem now—the goal is to simply take the next step.
In naming our struggles and defining a next step, we chip away at the fear and sadness that is holding us back. When our mind is challenged by duties that engage our purpose, we come to live and grow into our greatest self. We take another step on the journey of getting back to happy.
Remember, we are never alone in our struggles. In that season of hardship and sadness, Marc and I had not only each other but also our friends and our family. If you are experiencing a similar season, reach out to the people around you for help. And know that Marc and I are here for you—because you are a part of our family.
In just a few days, on November 4th, Marc and I will open up Getting Back to Happy, a premium online course to help you overcome the obstacles between you and your greatest self. With over 60 video and audio modules, we’ll teach you scientifically proven methods for building consistent growth into your life, creating sustained happiness and positivity, strengthening your love and relationships, and dealing with inevitable periods of pain and hardship along the way.
3. Lean forward and take action. Take that tiny step.
